SA-20P(OSA)

Single-engine amphibian aircraft.

Histoty of the single-engine amphibian (OSA) development.

Since 1992 JSC KNAAPO in cooperation with JSC “TANTK named after Beriev" have been working on the Be-103 amphibian program.

For today this aircraft is under the serial production at KNAAPO, and attracted attention of some potential customers in North America, Brazil, China, Malaysia, and Bulgaria.

Due to diversification of the Be-103 amphibians’ production, KNAAPO develops the single-engine amphibian OSA intended for Russian customers.

The succession to Be-103 structure (70%), Russian produced power plant and bought components make the OSA amphibian more suitable for production and operation in Russia and CIS countries.

The OSA amphibian prototype - a single specimen of the AS-20P light experimental amphibian (registration mark in the Airplanes Register: RA-3068K) - was under testing from 2002 till 2005 and performed about 100 flights (the total flight time is 28 hours).

SA-20P achieved flight performances (for February 2005)

Description of the single-engine amphibian.

Up-to-date light multipurpose single-engine amphibian is designed to transport passengers and cargoes to areas out-of-the-way for other transport regions with long riversides, lots of rivers, lakes and other ponds.

Operation conditions.

The amphibian can be operated from the runways of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 categories, unpaved runways with ground strength σ ≥ 4 kg/cm2 as well as from inland ponds and sea areas with depth no less than 1.25 m. The amphibian can be operated day and night in all-weather conditions. Instrumental and visual flights are permittable.

The amphibian base modification is equipped with one control panel. Should the training flights be required, the second control panel can be installed in the airplane.

The amphibian is very easy-to-piloting and doesn’t required high pilot rating. Pilots of D level can flying them.

Design features.

Airframe

The amphibian aerodynamic configuration is a monoplane with low-stab displacing wings with root-extensions. Classical hydrodynamic configuration together with low-stab wings provides maximal hydrodynamic quality while water takeoff run. Absence of flops makes the aircraft aerodynamic performances better.

Materials of the amphibian airframe are chosen to provide necessary strength and weight, the specified lifetime, fire safety and the amphibian durability.

Fuselage.

The amphibian airframe is built as a semi-monocoque with a load-bearing longitudinal framework and skin. The hull is divided into 5 sections by waterproof bulkheads to confirm with floatability requirements. In the forward fuselage there are onboard wefts for mooring the amphibian on water, towing, and lifting the aircraft up. There’s a landing gear well aperture with automatic doors in the down nose hull. The landing gear main struts are mounted to wing ribs and are retracted forward into the wing well.

Wings

The wings are detachable and consist of an inner wing and detachable wing parts. High-strength fasteners connect the wing parts. The fuel tanks are located between the front spar, leading edge, medium and hatch-end ribs of the inner wing. There’re hatches’ removable covers in fuel tanks and assembling and inspection hatches in leading and trailing wing edges.

Empennage

The amphibian horizontal tail plane has an elevator mounted in the area of three-blade propeller blowing.

The empennage consists of stabiliser, elevator with trimmer, fin, dorsal fin and rudder with trimmer. The structure provides removable covers for the rudder control system assembling.

In the rudder lower part a hydraulic rudder is installed; it has two operation positions: retracted and extended.

Due to the hydraulic rudder installed the amphibian’s turning radius on water doesn’t exceed 0.5 of wing span.

Power plant

Amphibian’s power plant consists of the Voronezh Motor Plant M-9F engine with MTV-9 type propeller, an underframe, exhaust collector, gears for the engine and units control, and cooling, starting, fuel and oil systems as well. Engine operation starting is provided by compressed air.

Engine power: 420 h.p., fuel: B91/115 GOST 1012-72, 100/100LL, oil: MS-20 GOST 21743. The engine can be operated on motor petrol with octane level not lower 85 (of AI-95 type). MTV-9 propeller’s type: adjustable pitch, pulling up.

Cockpit.

Canopy

The canopy frame is all-metal, the components are made from aluminum alloy sheets and have pressed-riveted structure; the ceiling panel of the rear canopy has glass-fiber material honeycomb structure.

Interior

The amphibian interior is made according to ergonomic principles and operational effectiveness, and to provide passengers and crew with all comfort conditions. Side windows have light sun curtains. Naval equipment and rescue means are placed in the forward part of the cabin. There’s a luggage compartment of 0.8 m3 bulk in the back cabin. The cabin possesses efficient heat-insulation and soundproofing.

In the cabin the pilots’ stations and passengers’ seats are located in six in a row. The path between the passengers’ seats is 170 mm, spacing – 1220 mm and 860 mm. To provide the easy access into the cabin, the left pilot’s seat can be back off up to 310 mm.

Landing gear

Landing gear is a tricycle type with nose wheel. The main struts are mounted on the wings ribs and retracted forward into the wing bay. The nose landing gear with castor is fastened to a frame of the nose part of the boat and retracted forward into the nose wheel bay. Retraction and extension of landing gear are carried out by hydraulic system.

Onboard equipment

The amphibian base variant possesses piloting and radio communication equipment (Russian made) required for VFR flights. It’s permissible to install onboard equipment for IFR flights.

Future trends of the OSA single-engine amphibian upgrading.

OSA following modification is an eight-seater (1+7) amphibian equipped with turboprop engine. Together with “Progress” Design Bureau KNAAPO developed a technical offer for 500 h.p. turboprop variant of AI-450 engine.

Design of Upgraded Single-Engine Amphibian equipped with Turboprop Engine

Due to the turboprop engine installation as against OSA equipped with M-9F engine the following advantages are foreseen:

  • reduction of empty weight by 220-250 kg that permits to increase the number of passengers up to 7 persons;

  • reduction of take-off run from water by 20%;

  • increase of climb rate;

  • increase of operating ceiling up to 8000 m;

  • turn to the ÒÑ-1, JP-4 jet engine fuel.
